Zawe Ashton To Play ‘Captain Marvel 2’ Villain

by Erik Amaya

Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) now has her primary foe in the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel.

Deadline reports Velvet Buzzsaw‘s Zawe Ashton will play the lead antagonist in Captain Marvel 2. Further details are, of course, hidden under Marvel Studios’ well-known veil of secrecy, but we encourage you to guess who she might play. To be directed by Nia DaCosta with a script from WandaVision story editor Megan McDonnell, the film will bring Carol to the modern day and — if WandaVision is anything to go by — address whether or not Carol ever came back to visit the Rambeaus. Teyonah Parris, who plays the grown-up Monica Rambeau on WandaVision, is set to appear in the film alongside Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani. We also suspect the film may tie into the eventual Secret Invasion series on Disney+.

That sense of everything becoming more connected and serialized has made all of the references to Carol on WandaVision all the more weighted. While Monica’s reactions suggest Captain Marvel never made good on her promise to come back, there seems to still be a soft-spot for her. And considering Maria (Lashana Lynch) died of cancer while Monica was lost to the Blip, we have to wonder if, perhaps, Carol finally visited her before she died. We imagine whether or not Carol came home in the years between the first film and Avengers: Endgame will form a lot of the sequel’s emotional core. It’ll be interesting to see how Kamala Khan’s (Vellani) hero-worship of Carol and the plans of Ashton’s character complicate matters.

Captain Marvel 2 is currently scheduled for a November 11th, 2022 release.
