HBO Max’s ‘Mortal Kombat’ Reboot Drops New Trailer

by Olly MacNamee

I blame Transformers myself. Ever since the live action film that kick started a money making, toy shifting franchise erupted onto screens in 2007 there seems to be a desire in Hollywood to take a well known pop cultural brand and inject it with some seriousness. And action, of course.

And so it goes with HBO Max’s new Mortal Kombat reboot film, judging by the new trailer that’s just dropped. Someone needs to tell them it’s only a bloody video game. Why so serious?

Still, it’s certainly an action packed take on a fan favourite franchise, so I imagine it will attract some eyeballs when it’s released later this Spring.

For now, enjoy the new trailer. But, be warned, it is a red band trailer, so it may not be suitable viewing for all and you will need to move your age before viewing it through HBO MAx’s official YouTube page:

“In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage — or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?”

Mortal Kombat is scheduled or relese in cinemas and streaming on HBO Max April 16th.
