Betty (Lili Reinhart) told Archie (KJ Apa) she would need a friend soon. Going by the promo for next week’s episode, that time is coming fast:
Indeed, it’s already here if that phone booth from last night’s episode is any indication. Polly (Tiera Skovbye) said she was calling from the highway, but could it be a coincidence that there’s a booth on that highway that’s covered in blood?
And what about the place where Polly was being held? Alice (Mädchen Amick) said it sounded like a spaceship. Could there be a connection between what’s going on with her and what’s going on with Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and the aliens?
As odd as it might seem to say after an episode where Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) threw a key party, it’s been nice (if surprising) how little the show has toyed with a Bughead reunion. That’s not a slight against Bughead but Riverdale isn’t falling back into old habits. It’s actually using this time jump to try new things, and that includes letting its characters mature and act like adults for a change.
High school Archie would’ve never been direct about his feelings for Veronica (Camila Mendes) or had an honest conversation with Betty about their relationship, but both of these things happened in ‘Lock and Key’. Archie’s wishy-washy days are over.
As for Kevin (Casey Cott), did the series really have to pair his news about getting engaged and expecting a child with his questioning everything, because only one of those storylines is interesting, and really, they made it eight years, and this is what’s going to break them?
Riverdale airs Wednesdays on The CW.
