Hiram Is Done Playing Nice On Next Week’s ‘Riverdale’

by Rachel Bellwoar

Has Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos) graduated from setting fires to setting bombs? It sounds that way in this preview for next week’s Riverdale:

But then a lot can happen in a Riverdale minute. One season you’re on death’s door, the next you’re coaching a high school football team. At least the show isn’t trying to threaten Hiram with Veronica leaving anymore (that ship has sailed) but given how cozy Archie (KJ Apa) and Veronica (Camila Mendes) are, it seems surprising that Chadwick (Chris Mason) hasn’t tried to put up more of a fight when it comes to the divorce. Hiram would’ve, and as much as Chadwick disappearing would be good for Varchie, what was the point of having the character if he doesn’t throw a hissy fit?

Other thoughts on this week’s episode:

  • So basically the whole zoom-up on Betty’s eye thing was her serial killer gene activating? WTH, Riverdale? Dark Betty (Lili Reinhart) was supposed to be over. This is Dark Betty without a wig, and for all that the show has flirted with having characters seek therapy both Kevin (Casey Cott) and Betty’s storylines this week showed how little the show is interested in having them heal.
  • Skeet Ulrich wanted to leave the series, but FP’s absence is really sticking out, in light of everything that’s been going on with Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Alice (Mädchen Amick), plus where are Polly’s twins?
  • Between Jughead almost getting fired, Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) dancing at the football game, and Archie cursing on the loudspeaker at school (because school spirit) the whole hiring school alumni thing is panning out like you’d expect…
  • I don’t care how rare a blood type Polly (Tiera Skovbye) has – a character isn’t dead on TV until there’s a body.

Riverdale airs Wednesdays on The CW.
