Preview: ‘Full Tilt Boogie’ – All-Ages Space Opera Fun Collected In May
by Richard Bruton
First appearing in 2000 AD Regened, then making the leap to 2000 AD proper, Full Tilt Boogie‘s space opera is something fast, furious, and absolutely fun – the epitome of what all-ages should be.
Full Tilt Boogie first appeared in one of the 2000 AD Regened all-ages Progs, just a single episode back in 2000 AD Prog 2130, where I described it as “a deliciously light and fun family tale.”
And it was definitely is all that and so much more, with this new collection giving us that first one-off introductory tale and the longer epic that followed as it jumped into 2000 AD proper, complete for the first time in softcover and an exclusive 2000 AD web shop hardcover.
It was the first of the Regened strips to make the jump to a full series in 2000 AD (I’m sure it won’t be the last), allowing Alex de Campi and Eduardo Ocana to go even further into the space opera family adventure they began in Regened.
It’s time to blast off in the good ship Full Tilt Boogie…
The story itself is a simple-ish one…
“Tee, along with her grandmother and cat, is a wannabe bounty hunter, odd-jobbing across the galaxy in her ship the Full Tilt Boogie, constantly on the lookout for the bigger, better payday. Some days, though, it’s less bounty-hunting and more baby-sitting, especially when they rescue the narcissistic Prince Ifan from Debtor’s Prison.
Accidentally sparking an intergalactic war, suddenly Tee finds herself chased across the universe by sacred knights and unstoppable undead warriors. Planet conquering, prince rescuing, and ramen eating – it’s all in a day’s work for the crew of the Full Tilt Boogie!”
But just because the plot’s simple to summarise doesn’t mean there’s not plenty of stuff going on, with the chance to explore the whole wonderful world of Full Tilt Boogie in glorious fashion, with De Campi’s obvious love of space opera anime coming through so well all the way through this collection, as well as Ocana’s lightweight, simplified style, full of character and wonder.
And ramen… let’s not forget ramen.
If you read it in 2000 AD, you’re going to enjoy seeing it all together here in one place.
If you’re coming to it fresh, it’s a real rip-roaring space opera adventure that absolutely works as a book for all ages.
Like Tee says… it’s time to buckle up for the Full Tilt Boogie experience… coming your way in collection on 13th May 2021!
