Jordan Vogt-Roberts To Direct ‘Gundam’ Live Action Film For Netflix

Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts will soon be making his way to Side 7.
Netflix has announced the filmmaker will be lending his talents to a live-action adaptation of Gundam. Whether or not that turns out to be a direct remake of Mobile Suit Gundam, a subsequent series, or an entirely new thing is yet unknown.

Mobile Suit Gundam premiered in 1979 and told the story of an interplanetary war between the Earth and the Independent Duchy of Zeon. When Zeon forces introduced mobile suits — giant humanoid robots piloted by human beings — the Earth military responded with the three experimental Mobile Suits: Gundam, Guntank, and Guncannon. The Gundam was piloted by the son of its chief designer and was stationed aboard a ship of children and junior officers who, as it turned out, had a certain affinity for telepathy. Between its goofy plots, serious considerations of warfare, and robot action, it became a favorite once the series was condensed into three feature films. Sequels and spinoffs followed, as did a following dedicated primarily to building models of the mobile suits featured in the series.
Vogt-Roberts seem like the perfect person to helm a westernized take on the Gundam phenomenon. His appreciation of the tone is on display in Skull Island and he shoots giant action with aplomb.
Of course, it is unclear how quickly the film will emerge, but we hope its sooner rather than later.
