Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings was one of the most exciting developments of Marvel’s Phase 4 slate. Besides finally introducing the character (played by Simu Liu) into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would also finally give the world a proper Mandarin (played by Tony Leung). And as the teaser reveals, the two characters are connected in very important way — a connection which totally makes sense when you recall Shang-Chi was originally said to be the son of pulp novel baddie Fu Manchu. But as seen here, the Mandarin is coming to collect on the freedom he allowed Shang-Chi. Will he go willingly into the Ten Rings?
As a teaser, it is still rough to gauge what the movie will be like. There’s definitely a martial arts flair here, which is reasonable considering the characters and cinematographer Bill Pope of The Matrix trilogy. It’ll be interesting to see how he deals with the strictures in lighting an MCU film. Although, he has experience with a certain Marvel webslinger elsewhere in the multiverse. It’ll also be interesting to see if Madripoor, introduced in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, ends up as a location in this film.
The movie is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and features Awkwafina and Michelle Yeoh in its cast. It is currently set for release on September 9th.
