Matthew Mercer Discusses Playing Hourman In ‘Justice Society: World War II’

Hourman is definitely getting a spotlight of late. Beyond his appearance on Stargirl (the Rick Tyler version, anyway) and a proposed feature film, he is one of they key characters in the upcoming Justice Society: World War II. Voiced by Matthew Mercer of Critical Role fame, viewers will get a chance to see him in his Golden Age Rex Tyler mode and in the following video, Mercer discusses what he likes about playing Hourman. Topics include who Hourman is, his role within the JSA, and the aspect of chemical dependence which is both key to Rex and teased in the film.

And though it’s clear from Mercer’s comments that Rex’s addiction on Miraclo is not a big aspect of the plot, seeding the idea now could lead to a very interesting follow-up film. Especially if we get something like a direct adaptation of The Golden Age down the line.

The plot of the film sees Barry Allen (Matt Bomer) traveling to World War II while testing his abilities and helping the JSA with their mission in the European theater. Well, at least he helps as much as he can without spoiling the timeline. The film also features the voices of Stana Katic as Wonder Woman, Elysia Rotaru as Black Canary, Chris Diamantopoulos as Steve Trevor, Omid Abtahi as Hawkman, Armen Taylor as Jay Garrick, Liam McIntyre as Aquaman, Ashleigh LaThrop as Iris West, Geoffrey Arend as Charles Halstead/Advisor, Keith Ferguson as Dr. Fate and Darin De Paul as Roosevelt.

Guardians of the Galaxy TV series episode helmer Jeff Wamester serves as director with Meghan Fitzmartin and Jeremy Adams on scripting duties. DC animation veteran Butch Lukic is the supervising producer while Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau serve as producers.

Justice Society: World War II hits digital on April 27th and disc formats on May 11th.
