‘Stargirl’ Gets Early Season 3 Renewal
by Erik Amaya
Just last week, we mentioned The CW typically announces a second round of renewals and pick-ups for its schedule every May. And seeing as it is the first business day of that month, the network has already made a few picks for its 2022 calendar with both Kung Fu and Stargirl getting early renewals. While we don’t talk about the former here very much despite its TV pedigree and wonderful use of “San Fransisco, British Columbia,” the program is attaining a following and illustrating how to do a female-focused action show without a superhero IP.
Not that The CW is done with superheroes as the Stargirl pickup means the network must like what it has seen of Season 2, set to debut this August. As we’ve previously reported, the new year will bring The Shade (Jonathan Cake) to Blue Valley while an apparently alive Sylvester Pemberton (Joel McHale) makes his way to town and Eclipso (Nick Tarabay) menaces the Courtney (Brec Bassinger) and the rest of the new JSA.
“While each boasts remarkable talent on both sides of the camera, Kung Fu and Stargirl have not only treated fans to some visually stunning action and high-flying heroics, but they also both strike very powerful emotional chords as they delve into the family dynamics and personal relationships at their core, and we are so excited to see what happens next,” CW president Mark Pedowitz said in a statement.
So beyond returning this August, Stargirl will also be back sometime in 2022 — we imagine it will remain summer viewing with the mainline Arrowverse shows staying put in the Fall and midseason territories. Honestly, we’re glad to see that as the superhero shows feel a little clustered right now on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights. Maybe another show should move into the Summer so its more of a 3-3-3 system. That would go a long way to avoiding burnout.
Stargirl returns August 10th on The CW.
