Soaring Penguin Press’ ‘The Collected Meanwhile…’ Available Now On IndieGoGo

by Brendan M. Allen

Originally launched in 1998 as a black and white anthology, ‘Meanwhile…’ was relaunched in 2015 with the aim of showcasing the diversity possible in comics storytelling. The first four issues are now being offered via Indiegogo campaign as a 220-page full color collection.

The first four issues of Meanwhile… were 52 pages long, and featured the relaunch of Strangehaven by Gary Spencer Millidge, and a brand-new series, The Bad Bad Place by David Hine and Mark Stafford, which has since been released as a graphic novel.

Every issue of Meanwhile… has been a mixture of ongoing episodes and self-contained stories, and featured creators from across the globe. Issues 1-4 included work by Yuko Rabbit, Chris Geary, Sally Jane Thompson, Krent Able, Jenny Robins, ILYA, Rainbow Buddy, Thierry Labrosse and Darryl Cunningham.

Soaring Penguin Press embraces crowdfunding as a way of increasing creator pay-outs. With Meanwhile… being one of the most enduring and popular comics published by Soaring Penguin, the hope is that this re-release will bring it to a wider audience.

Soaring Penguin Press Co-publisher John Anderson says

Putting these terrific stories in a single book edition means they will be available to an audience who might not otherwise see them. And they deserve to be read.

Co-publisher Tim Pilcher adds

Books by design have a longer shelf life. We hope that by having this collected edition available, readers will return to pick up subsequent editions of Meanwhile…

As backer rewards, the Indiegogo campaign offers original bookplates by Gary Spencer Millidge and Krent Able, cover prints, and limited print editions. The campaign runs from today through June 5, 2021, and you can find it right here

Brendan Allen has probably had more jobs than you would reasonably believe. Dog trainer? He’s done it. Flooring contractor? You bet! EMT? Army NBC specialist? Road dog for a Celtic rock band? Yes, yes, and och aye! Now he reads comics and writes about them. It's a rough gig. You can follow Brendan on Twitter @SaintAmish where he tweets about comic books and cystic fibrosis awareness.
