After far too long an absence from the character, Gail Simone is coming back to Red Sonja.
Dynamite Entertainment announced a new roster of talent Thursday afternoon for its upcoming prestige series Red Sonja: Black, White, Red. The first issue features work from Kurt Busiek, Mark Russell, and Amanda Deibert. The second will see Simone and frequent collaborator Walter Geovani contributing a “coda” to Simone’s acclaimed run which spans “the entirety of Sonja’s life.” Phillip Kennedy Johnson will also be contributing a story with art from Steve Beach focusing on an older Sonja, now a queen, whose hair may be “a distinguished white,” but who retains her abilities in battle. Additionally, David F. Walker and Will Robson are also onboard for a story which sees Sonja fighting a mythical creature literally out for her blood.
Subsequent issues will see Jonboy Meyers write and draw his own Queen Sonja story, Jeff Parker and Natalie Nourigat collaborating on a tale in which Sonja must solve the problem of a massive sentient fungus bog, and stories from Jonathan Lau, Soo Lee, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, Dearbhla Kelly, and more.
Covers for the upcoming issues will include work from Lucio Parrillo, David Nakayama, Sean Izaakse, Lau, Meyer, and, of course, featured cosplayers.
Red Sonja: Black, White, Red #2 is due out in August.
