The ‘Eternals’ Find A Reason To Get Involved In First Trailer
by Erik Amaya
The beautiful vistas and cinematography of this new Eternals teaser trailer hides a key plot point in plain sight: the Eternals — a group of genetically modified, nigh-immortal humanoids — never interfered in human events. But something will occur after the death of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) which compels them to finally step into the light and get involved.
And that declaration of their non-interference is interesting for two reasons. One: in the comics, they were created to protect the Earth from threats like the Chitauri and Thanos. Second: a non-intervention policy explains (partly, anyway) why they were no-shows in the final battle against Thanos. Although, one imagines they’ll still need a better reason for not defending the Earth in recent years besides “it’s in our by-laws.”
The threat bringing them out of the shadows appears to be the Deviants, the ancestral foes of the Eternals. But we expect a Celestial or two may show up before the film ends.
The film stars Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Madden, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Barry Keoghan, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek as members of the race of proto-humans. Kit Harrington is also onboard as the human Dane Whitman. Directed by Chloé Zhao, Eternals is slated for release on November 5th.
