‘Higurashi: When They Cry – SOTSU’ Trailer

by Tito W. James

2006’s When They Cry anime has some of the best spine-chilling horror in all of anime. I found the first four episodes to be a masterclass in suspense that left my skin crawling and my head filled with unanswerable questions. As the series progressed through its 26-episode run, it got bloodier, more convoluted, and honestly less scary.

That’s why I’ve had mixed feelings about diving into 2021’s new When They Cry series. It’s supposedly not a reboot but an expansion. Seeing as the anime is based on a Visual Novel with branching timelines there’s more plot left to explore. I’ll give this newer series a shot and see if it can deliver the thrills I crave from the series.

Look for Higurashi: When They Cry – SOTSU on Funimation July 1st.
