Troma Entertainment, and their “can-do” spirit, has always been a fixture of comic conventions even if the movies themselves lack for a certain quality. Nevertheless, in an era where any recognizable brand can get a big budget remake, Troma’s venerable Toxic Avenger is back with a remake from Legendary Pictures.
It is already assembling a cast featuring Peter Dinklage as the title character, Kevin Bacon as his adversary, and the likes of Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Elijah Wood, and Julia Davis. Also, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom‘s Jonny Coyne and I May Destroy You‘s Sarah Niles are joining up as, respectively, as a “shadowy criminal figure” and a corrupt city official.
Macon Blair wrote the script and will direct the picture, which sees Dinklage as “a struggling everyman who, when pushed into a vat of toxic waste, is transformed into a mutant freak who must go from shunned outcast to underdog hero as he races to save his son, his friends, and his community from the forces of corruption and greed.” Although Legendary is funding the picture, it doesn’t sound a million miles away from the film Lloyd Kaufman made nearly 40 years ago. Granted, the original film saw Toxie out for revenge against those who wronged him in addition to combating crime.
Production is slated to begin later this month.
