Jumping On: New Story Arcs Kicking Off On June 23, 2021

by Brendan M. Allen

One of the hardest and most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.

With that in mind, here are some titles kicking off new story arcs and a few interesting #1’s premiering this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, June 23, 2021.

New Arcs:

Home Sick Pilots #6, Image

‘New Story Arc – It’s three months since a haunted house walked through Santa Manos – and now the US military would like a walking ghost-powered weapon of their very own, thank you very much. The Home Sick Pilots might be the key to their getting one. If they can be convinced to sell out, that is.

Wasted Space #21, Vault Comics

‘This is it! The beginning of the end. With only five more issues to go, one question looms over this groundbreaking series: How many more dick jokes can they squeeze in? Oh, and, also, will Billy kill the Creator at last? Read the issues and find out!’

Undiscovered Country #13, Image Comics

‘Possibility, Part One:

The smash-hit series returns! The journey through the transformed United States continues as our group of explorers ventures into the third Zone: POSSIBILITY, a region built on the endlessly evolving landscape of American creativity, from folklore to VR.’

Notable #1’s:

Infinite Frontier #1, DC

‘When our heroes saved the Multiverse from Perpetua in Dark Nights: Death Metal, everything was put back where it belonged…and we do mean everything. All the damage from all the Crises was undone, and heroes long thought gone returned from whatever exile they had been in. Most of them, at least. Alan Scott, the Green Lantern from the Justice Society of America, has noticed some of his allies are still missing in action, and he’s determined to find them.

There are others, though, who would rather remain hidden than explain themselves, like Roy Harper, a.k.a. Arsenal, a man who should be dead but now is not. Plus, what does all this mean for the DCU’s place in the Multiverse? On opposite sides of a dimensional divide, both Barry Allen and President Superman ponder this question. Not to mention the Darkseid of it all! Or a team of Multiversal heroes called Justice Incarnate!’

V.E. Schwab’s Extraordinary #1, Titan Books

‘NYT bestselling author of Addie LaRue, V. E. Schwab returns for a new anti-villain story! Expands deeper into the world of Schwab’s critically acclaimed VILLAINS novels! After surviving a deadly crash, Charlotte Tills becomes “ExtraOrdinary,” gaining the ability to foresee a person’s death. But when she looks into her own future, only the face of notorious EO killer Eli Ever stares back!’

MFKZ #1, Behemoth Comics

‘The Netflix distributed hit movie by Studio 4 C (Batman: Gotham Knight, The Animatrix) comes to comics with an over-sized #1 event! Jump in the unique world created by legendary artist Run following Angelino and his flaming-skull pal Vinz, who live in a gang and cockroach infested dystopian metropolis called DMC, a city that hides secrets even weirder than its inhabitants.’

Good Luck #1, BOOM! Studios

‘What if Luck was quantifiable, and something everyone was born with?

Everyone, except the Unfortunates – teenagers born with absolutely zero luck. Now with the world mysteriously plunged into chaos and reality itself threatened, they will be our only hope to save the world.

Our last hope is those with no chance of success… the only thing anyone can wish them is Good Luck.

A bold new original series for fans of Seven Secrets and Runaways from Matthew Erman (Long Lost, Power Rangers: Sins of the Future) and Stefano Simeone (Mega Man: Fully Charged) about defying fate against impossible odds.’

Black Hammer: Reborn #1, Dark Horse

‘The Eisner Award-winning superhero saga returns in this ongoing series picking up twenty years later with new series artist Caitlin Yarsky.

Now, it’s twenty years later, and Lucy, and the world, have moved on. Living in the suburbs of Spiral City, Lucy is married and has children. But all is not blissful. Her marriage is falling apart, her job has reached a dead end, and for mysterious reasons, she hasn’t picked up the hammer in years.  But, as her domestic life begins to crumble, the secrets of the last twenty years, and the reasons Lucy really gave up being Black Hammer, begin to resurface, threatening her family, and the peace she has tried hard to find for herself.’

Vinyl #1, Image Comics

‘Plastic creators Doug Wagner and Daniel Hillyard return with Eisner Award winner Dave Stewart for an unsettling tale of psychopaths, sweet love, and a serial killer named Walter. When Walter’s best friend, the FBI agent charged with his capture, is kidnapped by a death cult of all-female sunflower farmers, Walter finds himself deep within an underground labyrinth filled with secrets and monsters… but are their monsters more horrific than his?’

Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1, Marvel

‘Marvel Comics is proud to present its first ever queer-centered anthology! Ring in Pride Month with an amazing assembly of writers and artists from all walks of life. Wiccan and Hulkling! Iceman! Mystique and Destiny! Karma! Akihiro! Nico Minoru and Karolina Dean! Celebrate these and so many more legendary characters from across the Marvel archive!

New and fan-favorite creators tell their Pride stories—stories of inspiration and empowerment, stories that illustrate “the world outside your window” in full color. Plus, some of Marvel’s biggest LGBTQ+ moments get a special reprinting. Don’t miss an extraordinary new chapter in Marvel history!’

Gamma Flight #1, Marvel

‘Spinning out of Immortal Hulk, Bruce Banner’s Gamma-Powered allies go on the run! Gamma Flight had one job: Find and stop the Hulk. But when push came to smash, they sided with the Green Goliath—and the human world intends to make them regret it.

Puck, Absorbing Man, Titania, Doc Sasquatch, Dr. Charlene McGowan and a horribly changed Rick Jones are fugitives from every known authority—but a team that is full of gamma is bound to break before long. Al Ewing, Crystal Frasier and Lan Medina mastermind a whole new world of gamma!’

Spawn’s Universe #1, Image Comics

‘A double-sized issue that begins a storyline so huge that three NEW SPAWN-related monthly titles will spill out from it, including…

A new SPAWN title.

Gunslinger Spawn monthly.

And a new TEAM book bringing a handful of these characters together in their own book.

With this one-shot…the world of SPAWN changes forever! New heroes. New villains, and more importantly, new titles coming to a comic shop near you. Join this list of artists as we unveil a historic moment in the mythology of Spawn’s Universe’

Batman: Reptilian #1, DC

‘What strikes fear into the hearts of those who terrorize Gotham? It used to be Batman, but something far more frightening than a mere man stalks the shadows—and it’s after Gotham’s villains. How savage must a monster be to haunt the dreams of monsters? Pick up this dark and bone-chilling tale by comics legends Garth Ennis and Liam Sharp to find out!’
