Although Sofia Hasmik‘s Chrissy Beppo is an occasional presence on Superman & Lois, the Smallville Gazette editor will be a larger part of the story next season.
TVLine reports the actor has been promoted to a series regular for the program’s second year — due to begin airing sometime in 2022. The move suggests the series will remain in Smallville (although it is possible Chrissy could get a job at the Daily Planet) and that the character will do more than stakeout the villains while Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) is otherwise unavailable.
But then, we are being a little uncharitable to the character. She was a late addition to a story very much focused on Lois, Clark (Tyler Hoechlin), their sons, and an invasion of angry, disembodied Kryptonians. There’s only so much character development to go around and the people most likely to get any of that outside of the Kent farmhouse are Lana Lang Cushing (Emmanuelle Chriqui) and her daughter Sara (Inde Navarrette). Even Lana’s husband and other child get left out in the cold on this front.
If the program is to stay in Smallville, it definitely needs to populate the town with characters it can use to cut away from the Kents and create different tones and stories. Or is that too much of an Arrowverse thing for a show that tries its hardest to be something different? Either way, adding someone like Hasmik to the regular cast could be a great asset.
Superman & Lois airs Tuesdays on The CW with new episodes returning July 13th.
