A new Blade director has likely been found.
Deadline reports Mogul Mowgli filmmaker Bassam Tariq is in negotiations to helm the production for Marvel Studios. As previously announced, Blade will feature Mahershala Ali in the title role. Stacy Osei-Kuffour is currently writing the script, itself based on the stories of the Daywalker created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan in 1973’s The Tomb of Dracula. As it happens, the book was Marvel Comics first foray into horror after it, DC Comics (then called National Periodicals), Archie Comics, and a few other publishers banded together to shadowban horror comics in the 1950s.
And so it seems Blade will be Marvel Studios’ first foray into a specific type of horror flick — one with traditional horror figures like vampires and werewolves. In fact, it is possible at this point that the film may draw on Tomb of Dracula for more than just Blade. That’s just idle speculation of course, but making Dracula a Marvel character would be a hilarious turn of events.
Granted, beyond the star, writer, and now director, next to nothing has been known about Blade since it was first announced in 2019. The only thing we know for sure, it will be distinct from the original Blade film trilogy, which starred Wesley Snipes and ushered in the superhero era we enjoy today.
Blade will likely arrive in theaters sometime in 2023.
