Soon, we will know Batgirl’s identity.
Deadline published a curious report Monday indicating a handful of actors are up for the title role in HBO Max’s Batgirl feature. The list includes Isabella Merced, Zoey Deutch, Leslie Grace, and Haley Lu Richardson — although the site notes she may have already walked away from the casting process. Whoever ends up in the role will play Barbara Gordon, the best known of the Batgirls across decades of DC Comics history. Curiously, though, the character was devised for the final season of the 1960s Batman television series, replacing initial Batgirl Betty Kane. Other characters taking the cowl include Cassandra Cain, Huntress, and fan-favorite Stephanie Brown.
The variety of actors up for the role suggest the film may or may not take place in the same reality as The Batman, where Barabra’s father, Jim, is played by Jeffrey Wright. The constant talk of that film taking place in its own world far from the established film universe of Man of Steel certainly makes it an option. At the same time, HBO Max is developing a Gotham City Police drama also set within the reality of The Batman, which in turn suggests Batgirl would make more sense there.
Unless, of course, the tone writer Christina Hodson and directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah intend to strike with the film is completely counter to The Batman. Warner Bros. is still pretty shaky about an interconnected DC film universe, so anything is possible.
It is unclear when Batgirl will premiere on HBO Max, but the accelerated casting process suggests the service and Warner Bros. Pictures want to start shooting in the nearish future.
