Chani Tells Paul Of Her Homeworld In ‘Dune’ Trailer

by Erik Amaya

Readers of Frank Herbert‘s Dune (or fans of David Lynch‘s film version) know the moment. Paul is asleep and dreams of a girl who makes a request before the vision ends: “Tell me of your homeworld, Usul.” Reversing the dream in on itself, the trailer for Denis Villeneuve‘s new attempt at bringing Dune to the screen uses the moment as a chance for Chani (Zendaya) to tell Paul (Timothée Chalamet) — and the audience — about the state of play on her world, Arrakis … also known as Dune.

The images are stunning — in fact, they have the feel of 1970s science fiction paintings. The dialogue also suggests Villeneuve will be less precious about the sound of Herbert’s characters. Although we image the Baron Harkonen (Stellan Skarsgard) may stick a little bit closer to character in the book. To be honest, not hearing some key lines gives us a little bit of pause, but maybe avoiding them in this trailer is the best way to get those unfamiliar with Dune a way in.

It has been known as an unfilmable book for a reason, after all.

Dune finally arrives in theaters and on HBO Max October 22nd.
