‘J.K. Simmons’ To Reprise Commissioner Gordon Role In HBO Max’s ‘Batgirl’

by Erik Amaya

It seems Batgirl will be set in the normal DC Films universe after all.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, J.K. Simmons is in talks to reprise his Justice League role as Commissioner James Gordon in the upcoming HBO Max feature. Leslie Grace is set to star as Barbara Gordon, Jim’s daughter, who takes on the crime-fighting identity of Batgirl for reasons not yet clear. Ms. Marvel directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are set to helm the picture with Birds of Prey‘s Christina Hodson providing the script.

The Multiversal location of the project is something we’ve been speculating about for quite some time. 2022’s The Batman will be set in a world apart from that of Justice League and features Jeffrey Wright as Gordon, which suggested the eventual Batgirl might also be played by a Black actor. Grace, of Dominican descent, still left the possibility open for the film to take place on The Batman‘s Earth, but the possible return of Simmons shifts the project back to the Earth of Man of Steel, Shazam, and other DC films.

We really wish the Arrowverse had given that film universe an Earth designation. Calling it “Earth-13,” for example, would make things much clearer. Then again, we doubt Warner Bros. Pictures would accept anything less than “Earth-1” if they ever became aware of the Multiverse naming convention.

Batgirl will come to HBO Max sometime in the near future.
