Tony Curran Joins ‘The Flash’ As Despero In Season 8

Barry’s (Grant Gustin) opponent on The Flash will be decidedly more cosmic in Season 8.

Deadline reports Tony Curran has joined the series as Despero. He is described as “a powerful and intelligent alien possessing incredible telepathic powers who left his homeworld — Kalanor — under mysterious circumstances.” Now, he’s in conflict with Team Flash and the fate of the world rests on the outcome of their battle.

The character was created by Garnder Fox and Mike Sekowsky and he famously debuted in 1960’s Justice League of America #1. In that story, Despero challenged Barry Allen to a version of chess. The alien’s mental powers made it possible to outwit the fastest man alive and expelled the League to different worlds. The villain returned time and again to battle with the League and his body was used, for a time, to house their ally L-Ron.

It is unclear if he is the alien menace said to be at the heart of “Armageddon,” the five-part crossover storyline encompassing the first five episodes of The Flash‘s upcoming season or the next antagonist Barry and the team will face after the winter break. According to Deadline, Curran is already in Vancouver filming, so it is possible he is involved with “Armageddon.”

The Flash returns November 16th on The CW.
