An Ecchi Comedy Hidden Gem: ‘Dragon Half’ Series Reviewed
by Tito W. James
Summary
Dragon Half lays the groundwork for sexy fantasy parody manga. The humor, art, and wacky characters hold up even 20 years later.
Overall
8/10
Dragon Half is and ecchi comedy manga series created by Ryūsuke Mita. The series follows the adventures of Mink, a teenage girl who’s half-dragon, in search of a potion that will turn her full-human so she can be with her crush. Mink’s dream guy is named “Dick Saucer” which should give you an idea as to the tone and humor of the series. But no matter how stupid or raunchy the jokes get they always made me laugh.

The world of Dragon Half is lowbrow science-fantasy. Characters go on quests but also travel in hover-cars and use robots. It’s like a cartoon parody of a JRPG. The artwork changes from sexy pin-up to chibi on a dime to land the punchline. Mita’s bikini-armor designs look sleek and fashionable and add to the “out of time” aesthetic. I was impressed at how well the story and humor held up considering it’s from the 90s.

I would recommend Dragon Half to fans of ecchi comedies like Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid. Mink and all her friends and enemies each have their own unique charm. If you’re curious about the series you can stream the anime OVA on Retro Crush. The entire Dragon Half saga is available in three manga omnibuses from Seven Seas Entertainment.
