Courtney Enters The Darklands In A Preview Of Next Week’s ‘Stargirl’
by Erik Amaya
We definitely hope Courtney (Brec Bassinger) likes the Jesus & Mary Chain as next week’s episode of Stargirl sees her in the dark realm of Eclipso (Nick Tarabay). Is it the same shadow lands The Shade (Jonathan Cake) and Dr. McNider (Alex Collins) were talking about or is it somewhere far stranger? And is Cindy (Meg DeLacy) correct in assuming there is no escape from this realm?
Our big takeaway from this week, though, is something we assume is being set up for Season 3: Mr. Bones. It remains to be seen if he’s running Earth-2’s DEO or if the Helix Foundation is some shadowy group he’s running to press-gang super-powered people into doing his wetwork. Whatever the answer, we expect Jennie’s (Ysa Penarejo) brother Todd to be at the center of it.
Which also makes you wonder if Todd’s powers are based in the same darkness as Shade and Eclipso…
Speaking of The Shade, we still doubt his motives are as villainous as they seem. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised to learn the entity that secret society summoned is some form of Simon Culp. As Dr. McNider pointed put, The Shade saved him by placing him in the shadow lands. Or, maybe, we still want that ambiguity because we liked the character in a certain 1990s comic book.
Meanwhile, we loved seeing Beth (Anjelika Washington) stand up to her parents’ indifference toward her. Though always characterized as sacrificing their time with her in favor of their careers, we always recall the way they regarded Beth in one of their early appearances — they seemed to actively loathe spending time with their energetic daughter. And for the character, outgrowing her need for them is something of a victory.
Stargirl airs Tuesdays on The CW.
