It looks like Rivervale has three devils showing their faces next week: the actual Devil; Nick St. Clair (Graham Greene), the guy who tried to force himself on Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) and Veronica (Camila Mendes); and the Trash Bag Killer, who terrorized Betty (Lili Reinhart). While the promo doesn’t offer much in the way of how these encounters will play out, at least one person is signing away their soul and the likeliest candidate might be Jughead (Cole Sprouse).
Jughead keeps coming out unscathed, though, so maybe he’s a match for the devil after all. Sure, his typewriter was destroyed this week, but given that he got an “I love you” after lamenting that Tabitha (Erinn Westbrook) had destroyed a gift from his ex-girlfriend (and yes, the typewriter is his source of income, but that’s not what he said when it got smashed), he’s one lucky dude. At least Tabitha questioned whether the fight was about ghosts or over legitimate concerns that Jughead isn’t pulling his weight, but he still came out easy (even if she did threaten him with a hammer a few times).
Another Rivervale resident not being the best partner? Veronica (Camila Mendes), whose reaction to Reggie (Charles Melton) sharing the news that his father (Matthew Yang King) just died was to make it all about their relationship. While the episode might’ve hinted that Veronica would be the one in danger from Reggie’s car (a la Stephen King’s Christine), she could do with being a little more sympathetic to Reggie’s grief, especially since he’s been there through her ups and downs with Hiram (Mark Consuelos).
Other than a milk carton photo and Betty mentioning that she might name the baby “Archie,” it looks like Rivervale is ready to sweep sacrificing Archie (KJ Apa) under the rug. La Llorona killing Toni (Vanessa Morgan), though, hit even harder after Toni chose to sacrifice herself for her son (Ace Rudy Allan Carter), and the makeup and costuming looked exquisite.
Even if it’s only temporary, this kind of event does raise the stakes, in terms of characters not being safe anymore. Will this be the death that sends Cheryl and Fangs (Drew Ray Tanner) out looking for a way to bring Riverdale back?
Riverdale airs Tuesdays on The CW.
