Art For Art’s Sake # 130 – Designing Costumes The McKelvie Way

by Richard Bruton

It’s a busy world, you’re running non-stop most of the time… but you need to relax, just that little bit… sit, grab a drink of your choice, and just take a few minutes to enjoy some art. This is Art For Art’s Sake

Declan Shalvey – A Mandalorian commission –

Joey Vazquez – bit of a Batman

Ethan Young:

My variant for TMNT #124 from IDW – I wanted to pay homage to the OG designs. I did the original in graytones, so coloring over that gave it a more gritty feel.

Emma Vieceli – on the last cover for Life Is Strange:

I’ll write something more in depth soon, but my making one last cover for Life Is Strange carries emotions with it. Who could have known, when I first drew that, that over 3 years later I’d be making a cover for our ending? A 3 year mini series’

Kevin Wada – Something for Batman Day

John Cullen

Darwyn Cooke – a li’l Batman downtime –

Kevin Nowlan

Darryl Cunningham does a few Marvel characters…

Nick Percival doing a bit of a Bolland…

Jamie McKelvie is one of the great costume designers in comics. Sure, he’s also of of the great comic artists, but here we’re having that look at that design work…

And that goes right back to the beginnings and Phonogram…

All the way through to Wicked & The Divine

Then there’s that time that Jamie McKelvie redesigned the X-Men costumes in 2017 – beautiful things…

And of course, that wasn’t the first great redesign from the artist. He had a very big hand in the Captain Marvel look as well…

As to how the Captain Marvel design came about, well that’s a great tale in itself…

Kelly Sue DeConnick and Jamie McKelvie brought the character to life, but only because DeConnick was prepared to put her money where her mouth was…

DeConnick explains:

“So [editor Steve Wacker] sent some designs that were done in-house and I did not love them, and I was like, ‘Can we get Jamie McKelvie to do this?’ And he was like, ‘No, we don’t have the budget for it.'”

“I like to say I’m good at taking no for an answer, but I’m really not, and so I kinda kept pushing for it. And Steve was like, ‘No. But you know … if Jamie were to do a redesign … just on his own, and you were to happen to come upon it and send it to me … I might be able to get Marvel to pay for it.’

“And so I called Jamie and was like, ‘Alright, I want you to make a bet with me, I bet if you do a Carol Danvers redesign for Captain Marvel that Marvel will buy the design from you. And if I win this bet, then I get a redesign and you get paid. And if I lose this bet, I will pay for the redesign. My husband would have murdered me, because you don’t front money for billion dollar companies. I mean, I would have murdered me, that’s nonsense.”

Thankfully, McKelvie took her up on it and Marvel ended up buying the design.
