The Comicon Advent Calendar: Day 11 – Cindy & Biscuit’s Magical Seasonal Adventures…

by Richard Bruton

Another day closer to Christmas, another day to give you one of our seasonal presents in the Comicon Advent Calendar. Think of it as our little gift to you – once a day, something festive to make you smile… and today, it’s the return of something wonderful, Dan White‘s Cindy and Biscuit...

Now, Cindy and Biscuit by Dan White is a comic that I just adore and have done since I first saw it so many years ago. I last told you about it back in 2018, when I reviewed Cindy and Biscuit Sundays.

Basically, all you really need to know is that Cindy’s a young girl and Biscuit’s her dog. They go out on adventures. And on those adventures, they fight monsters. And aliens, and werewolves, and snowmen (abominable and otherwise), and out of control robots from other dimensions, and…well, you get the idea.

All Cindy has to keep the monsters at bay is a good strong stick (“good soldier” as Cindy describes it),  and her trusted companion, Biscuit. You can, and you should pick up the entire Cindy & Biscuits over at Dan White’s store.

What makes it so special is the layers that White adds to it all. Sure, Cindy’s just your average kid when you first see her, aside from the whole protecting her world against all the aforementioned monsters, but White takes you way deeper than that, and you get to see the whole story for what it is, packed with sadness and joy, where the melancholy and the darkness begin to creep into this world, layer over layer over layer so cleverly added.

But for this Advent post, I’m picking just a few winter-themed tales to delight you with. First up, Cindy and Biscuit inThe Snowman, with Cindy realising that there’s something just not right with the snowman in her yard…

So, Cindy being Cindy, she takes matters into her own hands. Brilliantly, brutally, doing what she has to do to keep everyone safe.

Monster vanquished, obviously the world can’t wait to give her a pat on the back and thank her for all she does, night after night, day after day.

Except it’s never quite like that, not for poor, misunderstood Cindy…

And there you have it – everything that makes this a favourite right there. Action, monster-bashing, and an ending that, admit it, puts just that little shiver up your spine.

Next up, something lighter – because White always tempers the dark with the light – well, most of the time.

It’s Cindy and Biscuit in ‘Abominable, where we get a typical day in the life of these two, with yet another monster coming at them… and Cindy responding with the only weapons she happens to have to hand…

And there’s another thing about Cindy and Biscuit – the absolute quality of White’s cartooning, the kinetic motion of the fights are just something to behold, all played out in such a simple line, but so effective.

Except this time, the monster, the veritable Abominable Snowman, proves not to be such a bad monster after all and we get to enjoy just a moment of simple happiness in the snow… something much needed with all that dark going on in the adventures…

And finally, for this Advent treat from Cindy and Biscuit, a coloured couple of pages from that Cindy and Biscuit Sundays I mentioned, and a surprise return from a friend as Cindy finds herself outnumbered in a snowball fight…

Now, wasn’t that gorgeous? Wasn’t that just perfect? You can get hold of some of Dan White’s Cindy and Biscuit, as well as the excellent Sticky Ribs, at White’s website shop.
