‘Commando’ And ‘2000 AD’ Artist Ian Kennedy Passes (1932 – 2022)

by Olly MacNamee

Artist Ian Kennedy has passed away at the rip old age of 89. Born on 22nd September 1932 in Dundee, Scotland, Ian grew up with a love for aeroplanes, but he was never to be a pilot due to an ear infection in his youth. But what was the Royal Air Forces’ loss was the comic book industries gain as Ian went on to work for 70 years on UK comics such as Commando, 2000 AD and Dan Dare in The Eagle.

From a personal point of view, I was very fortunate to spend a wonderful evening with him and his son in a pub in Leeds during one Thought Bubble convention. We talked, we laughed and we drank. And Ian had a great deal of storytelling in him that evening. From then on, he would always warmly greet me whenever I bumped into him at various comic convention across the UK. And so his passing does hit harder than many others I have reported upon in the past. Needless to say, my thoughts are with Ian’s surviving family on this sad day.

See you in the skies, Ian!
