Ms. Marvel is finally ready for her Disney+ debut.
The platform announced on Tuesday that the series, starring Iman Vellani in the title role, will premiere June 8th. It also released a trailer (above) giving a few hints to how this version of the story will play out. Kamala Khan (Vellani) is an ordinary Pakastani-American girl from Jersey City whose humdrum life of school and faith is rocked when circumstances give her the superpowers she’s always dreamed of having. Will the #1 Avengers fangirl find herself among their number or will dark forces try to learn the source of her abilities through unscrupulous methods?
The cast also includes Rish Shah, Mohan Kapur, Zenobia Shroff, Yasmeen Fletcher, Saagar Shaikh, Matt Lintz, Anjali Bhimani, and Lauren Marsden. Bisha K. Ali serves as head writer and showrunner. Directors include the Batgirl team of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah and fellow directors Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Meera Menon.
But to go back to the trailer for a moment, it is interesting to note how coy it is being about how Kamala gets her powers. Back in the comics, it happened because a Terrigen bomb went off over Manhattan, activatating most Inhumans in the path of the mist. And, indeed, Kamala turned out to be Inhuman. But with that group of characters seemingly burned by the short-lived Inhumans television series — which we covered extensively — its possible the origin of Kamala’s abilities will get a huge reworking.
No matter the way Kamala receives powers, though, the show seems charming enough. It also seems different from Moon Knight, which is a good thing as the Marvel shows should have varying tones as they switch off in the Disney+ schedule.
Ms. Marvel starts her Disney+ run June 8th.
