Christopher Lloyd To Join ‘The Mandalorian’ In Season 3

by Erik Amaya

Actor Christopher Lloyd is finally joining the galaxy far, far away.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Back to the Future veteran will appear in the third season of The Mandalorian in an undisclosed role. The program is currently shooting, which means more casting news will pop up from time to time. And, beyond noting the actor’s upcoming appearance, confirmation that production has begun suggests the show might be ready to return to its customary December release window.

Granted, later episodes of The Book of Boba Fett already made it feel as though the series had returned with its emphasis on Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu in the final three episodes. That said, steely-eared commenters online noticed that The Book of Boba Fett was always meant to be the next chapter of The Mandalorian. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced it as such during the 2020 Disney Investor Day presentation. Although, at the time, Fett itself had not been announced, but her mention of “the next chapter” of the Mando tale premiering in December of 2021 syncs up with the scheduling and subject matter of the Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) series.

Of course, back in 2020, the two programs — along with Ahsoka and the now defunct Rangers of the New Republic — were meant to crossover in a culminating event designed by executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. It is unclear if this master plan is still happening or if the big events will occur within the confines of The Mandalorian instead.

As Star Wars is an important hub for Disney+, The Mandalorian‘s third season joins a calendar which includes May’s Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series, and the Diego Luna-starring Andor later in the year. Presumably, Ahsoka and other live action projects announced in 2020 will find their Disney+ berth in 2023.

The Mandalorian will presumably return this winter on Disney+.
