‘Superman & Lois’ Is Juggling A Lot

While Superman & Lois is certainly an entertaining and engaging show, one can’t help but wonder if it is overextending itself. There are a lot of different plot threads happening at once with a lot of different characters being pulled in different directions. The show seems to be juggling them quite well, devoting time to each one. Or at least, as much time as the show can. But a story’s attention is a zero sum game and I can’t help but wonder if, perhaps, some of the more lagging plot lines are bringing down the others.

After being notably absent for several episodes after an injury, John Henry Irons (Wolé Parks) returns to the show’s story. But this episode mainly focused on his daughter, Natalie (Tayler Buck), as she tries to come to grips with the very weird reality of her life. Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) tries to help them while also dealing with the fallout of Ally Allston (Rya Kihlstedt). Then there’s the boys, Jordan and Jonathan (Alex Garfin and Jordan Elsass), who each have their own problems that need to be worked out.

It seems as if the bottom of this already congested show is Lana Lang’s (Emmanuelle Chriqui) campaign for mayor. This is probably the shows weakest plot line as it has nothing to do with the show’s supernatural and fantasy elements. Maybe, as a show on The CW, this plot line check the box for normal family drama. In the beginning, it was handled quite well, but as the tension for the show’s main villain increases, I can’t help but wonder where this small town drama is going and whether it’s unnecessary baggage. Maybe it will come back into the fold soon, but right now it feels as if it’s going in its own direction separate from everything else.
