‘Superman & Lois’ Shines Even Without Him
by Frank Martin
It might seem strange to have an episode of Superman & Lois without Superman — especially on a channel like The CW, which is notorious for fabricated family drama. Even previous episodes of the show weren’t immune to the non-superhero drama surrounding Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui) and her family. Yet despite that, or maybe because of it, this week’s episode manages to be fresh, engaging, and a much needed chance for some other characters to grow and step into the spotlight.
Even though he wasn’t in the episode, Superman’s (Tyler Hoechlin) absence plays an important role in the plot of other characters. Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) and her family have to deal with the very real and scary consequences of having Superman as a father. Stories spend so much time focusing on superheroes and adventures that sometimes family members are often left out of the fold. Not just that, Lois also has to deal with the outstanding issue of the X-K drug that has ripped a hole both in her family and Smallville. Not to mention John Henry Irons (Wole Parks) getting back into action to fill the void Superman has left, which strains the relationship with his daughter, Natalie (Tayler Buck). And speaking of the hero void, this also gives an opportunity for Jordan (Alexander Garfin) to step up his super heroics in an awesome way. Unfortunately, he’s also experiences the consequences of that, too.
Of course, the question of where Superman has gone won’t be left unanswered for long. The episode ended on just the right cliffhanger to get fans interested in what comes next. Personally, I was hoping for Bizarro to play a bigger role as a villain for the season. He might not be gone forever, but having Superman travel to his world will certainly see the stakes of the show amp up as it drives forward towards a bigger bad guy and the season finale.
Superman & Lois returns April 26th on The CW.
