“Lost” Tales Of Dr. Seuss To Be Published In A New Collectible Hardcover

by Brendan M. Allen

Fans of the renowned children’s book author Theodor Seuss Geisel (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss) will soon be treated to a treasure trove of hard-to-find stories that have been out of print for generations. The surprise release, The Zaks And Other Lost Stories, will be published in July by ComicMix, an independent publisher and pop culture media company, via a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter that launches today.

ComicMix recently discovered stories that have fallen into public domain or have otherwise become available to be reprinted, stories that otherwise might have been lost to the ages. After an extensive retouching and restoration process, Seuss’s original text and illustrations will be published simultaneously in paperback and a collectible paper-over-board edition. The book is not associated with, nor approved by, Dr. Seuss Enterprises L.P., which owns some of the copyrights of Geisel’s works.

The Zaks And Other Lost Stories will include an afterword detailing how the book came to be, and it’s led by the title story and an early version of “The Sneetches.” The remaining four stories will be revealed during the course of the crowdfunding campaign as funding levels are reached, until the campaign ends on May 31.

Glenn Hauman, “The Big Guy” of ComicMix, further explained the book’s origin:

“We found Dr. Seuss stories, once thought to be lost,

that we’re bringing to you at a reasonable cost.

Some tales are familiar, though not quite this way,

but all fine examples of Seuss’s wordplay!

We spruced them all up, and now are good times

to rediscover his artwork and rhymes.

We filled up a book to put on your shelf

So that you can at last read them for yourself!”

Geisel, who passed away in 1991 at the age of 87, is perhaps the greatest and most well-known children’s book author of all time. The Pulitzer Prize-winner wrote and illustrated more than 60 books spawning numerous adaptations into film, theater, and television, many of which are still on today’s bestseller lists. His delightful wordplay, rhyme, universal themes, and wildly imaginative artwork have delighted children for generations.

Backer rewards begin at the $10 tier, for a The Zaks poster. A paperback of the collection can be had for $20 ($15 Early Bird), and hardcovers come in at the $30 level. Check out the campaign right here.
