EA Sports Drops ‘FIFA’ Name From Soccer Games; Will Go By ‘EA Sports FC’

Electronic Arts has announced its decision to completely break away from the FIFA name brand for its football titles. Instead, future titles will be called EA Sports FC starting in 2023. This comes just months after an exclusive from VGC which claimed Electronic Arts’ CEO Andrew Wilson said during private meeting that the FIFA license was an impediment to their ability to innovate with their football games.
Of course, the press release was considerably more gracious about having worked with FIFA, with Wilson saying: “We’re thankful for our many years of great partnership with FIFA. The future of global football is very bright, and fandom around the world has never been stronger. We have an incredible opportunity to put EA Sports FC at the heart of the sport, and to bring even more innovative and authentic experiences to the growing football audience.”
Though EA will be breaking away from FIFA, they will still maintain a working relationship with their existing football partners. Premiere League, LaLiga, Bundesliga, UEFA, and CONMEBOL are all quoted in the press release as being excited to continue working with EA with their EA Sports FC titles.
FIFA 2023 will still release this fall, and EA plans to discuss additional news concerning EA Sports FC next summer.
