Kevin Considers Changing Sides When ‘Riverdale’ Returns

by Rachel Bellwoar

Riverdale is taking another one-week hiatus, but that just means more time to mull over this week’s musical episode, and whether Archie (KJ Apa) and the gang are going to fare well against the plagues that are coming according to this trailer:

Maybe the reason this year’s musical episode didn’t feel as a musical as previous iterations is because most of the musical numbers (outside of the bachelorette party) were stage performances instead of characters breaking into song. Integrated musicals aren’t inherently more musical than backstage ones, but they tend to be more whimsical, and maybe with all the superpowers and wedge spells being cast, Riverdale didn’t feel like they needed more whimsy. It probably was a mistake, though, to have Fangs (Drew Ray Tanner) bring up Sweeney Todd, because American Psycho was never going to compare to Sondheim.

At least TBK’s dead (unless Betty (Lili Reinhart) shot the wrong costumed killer), but there’s no way the episode should’ve been able to end without showing Betty take off TBK’s mask. Regardless of the fact that he or she could still turn out to not be the real killer, it’s a rule as old as Scooby Doo that villains must always be unmasked. Plus, why didn’t Betty’s ability to see auras come into play at all?

Other thoughts on “American Psycho:”

  • Anyone else suspect that this won’t be the last we see of the Black Hood’s superfan?
  • It’s nice that Veronica (Camila Mendes) and Betty’s friendship is having a comeback, but Kevin (Casey Cott) seems past redemption at this point. Sure, the wedge spell might have given him a scare, but he also bailed on his singing commitments for a petty reason.

Riverdale returns June 26th on The CW.
