‘Pennyworth’ Returns In October

by Erik Amaya

Batman’s butler will adventure once more this October.

Per IGN, Pennyworth will make its proper HBO Max debut that month with an amended title — Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler. Jack Bannon returns as Alfie, the former SAS officer whose life becomes increasingly intertwined with Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge) and Martha Kane (Emma Paetz) as all three navigate a 20th Century version of the British Civil War. Of course, as Season 3 begins, the war has been over for five years and the late 60s introduces an era of super-heroes.

Nevertheless, we can’t help but feel the title change is part of the current Warner Bros. Discovery corporate strategy, which seems interested in emphasizing Batman whenever possible. Of course, that precludes Batgirl from being completed as that film no longer fits the strategy for some reason.

At the same time, Pennyworth has always proved to be a strong series, taking some its cues from Gotham and executive producer Bruno Heller‘s interest in building an immersive alternate history for the characters and the UK. But considering his comments about superheroes in the Gotham days, it will be interesting to see how he confronts mystery men directly.

It will also be interesting to see if the ten-episode third season will be designed as its last. Presumably, all the DC series on HBO Max (besides those in development) are on the chopping block as WBD shapes a new direction for the brand overall.

Pennyworth returns this October on HBO Max.
