Advance Review: Zeus Is Loose In `There’s Something Wrong With Patrick Todd’ #3

by Tom Smithyman

While the series started off strongly, it has hit a rut thanks largely to a one-dimensional villain. While he clearly represents a threat, Zeus feels more like a Jason Voorhees instead of a fully fleshed out character.

If ordinary people are judged based on the company they keep, then comic book heroes are only as good as their villains. Look no further than the rogues’ galleries including the Joker, the Riddler and the Green Goblin trying to put Batman or Spider-Man in their graves each month.

These baddies have intriguing back stories – often even better ones than the heroes. That makes them interesting and, if done right, even somewhat understandable. When they’re not done right, they come off as stiff, narrow-minded drones.

That’s where things are right now with Zeus – the machete-wielding, headgear-wearing, severed-head carrying nutjob who has been chasing protagonist Patrick Todd since the premiere issue. We don’t know much about Zeus, other than he really likes his machete and he really wants to get to Todd. All we find out in this issue is that he believes Todd’s “people” are responsible for killing his family. There’s a story there, we just don’t know what it is.

Writer Ed Brisson is trying weave together multiple story lines, including one with a police detective hot on the trail of Todd. The teen has been using his telepathic abilities to force people to steal so he can pay for his mother’s medical treatment. None of those plotlines, though, seem strong enough to keep the reader interested in what’s going on.

Artist Gavin Guidry has mostly pro forma work to do here. He turns in the required imagery of the detective interviewing people as well as a chaotic chase scene. Beyond that, though, there’s not much exciting or memorable.

This series started off strong. It would be a shame for the creative team to pull the story together in a compelling way only to have no one notice because the audience already gave up. Hopefully Brisson and team can turn things around quickly.

There’s Something Wrong With Patrick Todd #3 will be available for purchase tomorrow.
