Paranoia, Jealousy, And Lust: ‘One True Love’ Is Live On Kickstarter

by Brendan M. Allen

Paranoia, jealousy, and lust are a potent recipe for disaster. One True Love, the 80-page neo noir from Mario Candelaria and J. Paul Schiek, is now live on Kickstarter.

‘Welcome to the mythical landscape of 1969 Los Angeles—a place where escaping your troubles seemed to be just as much of a draw as the sunshine and palm trees.

After pulling off the score of a lifetime, two East Coast mobsters named Peter and Paul lay low at their childhood friend Matthew’s Hollywood Hills home until the heat dies down. Everything is going to plan until Matthew’s party girl daughter Amber unexpectedly comes home. Tensions quickly ramp up as the crew conflict over how to handle this unexpected element.’

“One True Love combines my two greatest creative loves; crime and escapism,” said Candelaria. “As a kid born and raised in New York City, California always embodied the American Dream in my eyes. The type of paradise that promised a better life across the country, full of year-round sunshine and relaxed beach vibes. Our characters are so focused on trying to escape toward their dreams of a better life in this world that they fail to recognize that anyone who helps you steal, no matter how well you take care of them, can never truly be trusted.”

Backer rewards kick in at the $20 ($15 Early Bird) level for a digital copy of the book. Physical copies are available at the $33 ($28 Early Bird) tier. At higher levels, there are bookplates, sketches, pitch sessions, cameo appearances (some with dialogue!), and original art from the book. Check out the campaign here.
