The Comicon Advent Calendar 2022: Day 3 – Michael Carroll’s Dreddmas Greetings…

by Richard Bruton

Another day, another chance to open another virtual window on The Comicon Advent Calendar – this time taking a little look at writer Michael Carroll’s 2000 AD inspired Christmas goodness…

In addition to being one of Tharg’s leading script droids over at 2000 AD Towers where he’s responsible for writing Judge Dredd, Proteus Vex, Mayflies, Dreadnoughts for 2000AD and Judge Dredd Megazine, plus many other comic and prose works, Michael Carroll also finds time to maintain a number of websites. These include his main one,, the Rusty Staples comics blog, the Quantum Prophecy site for his YA books, the official Harry Harrison site that he helped get online, the Cosmic Meadows Alphaville site (he’s a huge fan), and From Mars!, described as ‘Michael Carroll’s blog of stuff.’ Yes… busy man.

Anyway, it’s on his From Mars! site that he pulls together some wonderfully silly and fabulously fun things he did over the years for the 2000AD messageboard, where they used to create an Advent Calendar thread and it’s a lot of fun…

2010 — Christmas Presents from Another Dimension

Both celebrating and mourning the 2000 AD Annuals that used to be perennial favourites under the Christmas tree of kids all over Britain from 1977 to 1991, Carroll imagines just what might have happened if the tradition continued. (And yes, like he says, we did get the softcover ‘yearbooks’ from 1992 to 1995 but they just weren’t the same.)

2011 — The Thargos Catalogue

What every child would eagerly await to start making Christmas lists from – the Thargos catalogue, full of all things 2000 AD. (For you young things or those of you not from here in Britain, the Argos catalogue was a thing published by Argos – you’d pick what you wanted from the catalogue, head into the store, fill in an order and get it.

Mike’s even gone and done an animation for it as well – dedication!

2012 — 2000 AD Selection Box and Chocolate Dredd

What’s more Christmassy than a selection box? Every year, without fail, there’d be one in the Christmas stocking. Here’s Mike’s 2000 AD inspired version from Grudbury…

2013 — More Christmas Presents from Another Dimension

More classic toys now – Mike’s very own 2000 AD versions of Airfix kits and Dinky Toys.

“My original scale for the Lawmaster kit was 1/72, but a friend on-line recently pointed out that seemed way too small, so I did some calculations — the same calculations I should have done back when I created the image (truth is I used an aircraft kit box for reference and didn’t think to change the scale) — and realised that the scale was much closer to 1/12. I could have re-rendered the image, but it was much easier and faster to make the changes in Photoshop.”(Now that’s overthinking things!)

2014 — Cambermeg Green

Perhaps his finest thing – the Camberwick Green meets Mega-City One animation! Again, if you don’t know it, go look it up, Camberwick Green, Chigley, Trumpton, a trilogy of animations from Britain that people of a certain age will get all wistful about!

“This short movie took me weeks to create! There’s a few things I wish I’d done better — I should have rendered it at twelve frames per second instead of thirty: that would make it look a lot more like stop-motion animation — but I’m still pleased with how it came out (there’s a couple of in-jokes in there that I’m pretty sure still haven’t been found!).”

2015 — Walter’s Present to Judge Dredd

Nowadays, there’s Christmas jumpers for absolutely everything, including 2000 AD… but back in 2015, well this was about as near as we got…

2016 — Ran out of Time

Okay, by this time there were other things to be getting on with, like writing comics for a start. But it’s still a good entry for 2016…
