Day 8 of The Comicon Advent Calendar and hopefully you’re beginning to feel a lot like Christmas… today it’s a seasonal bit of John Constantine…
Thanks, Gerald, you silly little sod. It’s Christmas Day, I’m dying for a fag and a curry, I’m getting fucking frostbite in me foot and now there’s some sort of undead pox-ridden greebly wandering about. Thanks a bunch.

This is John Constantine in ‘Another Bloody Christmas‘ by Dave Gibbons, an illustrated prose tale from the Vertigo: Winter’s Edge (anthology III ) from 1998. If Christmas is a time for looking back and making wishes… I wish we still had Vertigo comics, a genuinely radical publishing idea from a major publisher.
The seasonal outing for the Scouse magician begins on Christmas Day and Constantine’s run out of fags. The local shop’s closed, the 24-hour Tesco isn’t, and there’s a bloody hole in his bloody shoe. Oh, the season just isn’t warming poor John’s cockles at all.
And then he smells the brimstone… and you know John just can’t ignore something like that… all of which leads to a grand Christmas tale of magic, John punching out Santa (well, sort of), and the little bit of Christmas cheer that comes from an unexpected pressie – even if that’s only a pack of Silk Cut in the pocket of a Santa outfit nicked off a dead guy.
