Review: ‘Batman/Superman: World’s Finest’ #11 Brings A Beginning To An End

Magog is one of the most impactful characters in the DC Universe, but he’s never really had a presence in the main DCU. He’s been a spectre of a potential horrific future, of what the DCU could be if it went too grim. World’s Finest #11 gives readers a glimpse into how he could finally enter the present day world of the DCU.

Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, and Steve Wands end Boy Thunder’s story and begin Magog’s.

Boy Thunder has maimed the Joker, and now he has set his sights on the Key. Unfortunately, Superman and Batman have realized this young hero has more power than he can handle. The two greatest heroes of the DC Universe have a difficult decision to make, and it could lead to their undoing.

Waid weaves his “untold tales” concept into a story that’s impactful in several ways. He creates an emotionally resonant end to this story, showing Superman’s infallible faith in humanity is unshakable. But he also takes perhaps his greatest contribution to the DCU and gives it a fresh coat of paint. It’s done in such a way that I fully believe that this is what Waid intended from day one. Best of all it works as a satisfying story of its own.

Mora and Bonvillain continue to be the major draw for this book. They are excellent storytellers, with Mora’s layouts giving the pages a cinematic feel, and Bonvillain’s colors echo the layout, driving the chase as much as Mora’s figures. Bonvillain continues to use colors that evoke a feeling of bright hopefulness, which makes Boy Thunder’s fate even more tragic. Mora does everything in this issue from superhero action to new villain designs. He’s made this book such a joy to read, and I’m thrilled to see him moving to Shazam after the series wraps.

The next chapter is thrilling- for the creative team and the characters. I’ve enjoyed it and am glad we get an epilogue next month.
