AmaZINE Special Edition: Previewing ‘Vyrmhack’

by Anton Kromoff

Welcome to the table,

I love Zines! For those of you who have been following my new regular series AmaZINE which dives into all the fun Zines that come across my desk, you probably already have a good idea of how much I love these things.

Well, I have something new that is just dropping as I am typing this up, and fans of Zines and TTRPGs are not going to want to miss this one!

From Feral Indy Studios comes another wild romp full of darkness and peril. Vyrmhack proposes to be a thrilling combination of a TTRPG and a skirmish game. Set in a rotting world of clashing sword and bone, this zine is a toolkit* of rules that are compatible with both TTRPG modules and wargame scenario books.

Another brainchild of writer and illustrator Charles Ferguson-Avery, Vyrmhack offers a simple and easy-to-learn gameplay experience that, if past offerings are any indication, will not skimp on the lore and story seed ideas. The game lets players take on the role of a single-player character or in a fun twist to the normal genre-bending expectation, build a small Warband of characters who can explore the perilous world setting, and clash with a storyteller or other players at the table as they fight to survive this rotting and twisted landscape.

With a focus on mechanics that are “simple, deep, and fun,” Vyrmhack offers a range of monsters, gods, magic, and more for you to explore as you try and survive in a world ruled by despotic lords, primal sorceries, and fell gods.

You can pre-order for Vyrmhack starting today, through April 30, 2023 at this link, with shipping starting on May 1. If you want to get your hands on a physical copy, I suggest you act sooner than later as I myself have spent time tracking down some of the older offerings from Feral Indy Studio and some of the bigger books tend to have low print count and runs that are not redone frequently. Digital copies tend to be available regularly, but if you like to put things on the shelf you are going to want to move fast as supplies may be limited.

Vyrmhack will be printed at an A5 size and staple-bound in a zine format, with a risograph cover. You also get a PDF file with a purchase to keep on hand for your VTT adventures.

And until next time, gear up, gather your party, and get ready to embark on a journey into the dark and dangerous world of Vyrmhack!
