There’s a fine line between the method actor and the schizophrenic-Nicolas Cage.
Nicolas Cage’s unconventional acting career has won the hearts of many colleges’ “Bad Movie Clubs.” Born Nicolas Kim Coppola, Cage renamed himself after Marvel Comics Luke Cage to help him stand out from other actors. Cage’s list of wacky shenanigans includes but is not limited to:
- Eating a rattlesnake when he was 16 because he felt bad about killing it.
- Eating a cockroach in Vampire’s Kiss (it took three takes).
- Buying several castles, a small Island, and the most haunted house in America.
Now Cage is starring in Mandy, a surreal horror film from director Panos Cosmatos (Beyond The Black Rainbow). According to the obtuse trailer, Cage will have to rescue Mandy from “Crazy Evil,” apparently. Well, having your girlfriend kidnapped by demons is pretty normal considering that Nick Cage once woke up in the middle of the night to discover a naked man eating a fudgesicle at the foot of his bed. Nothing is too weird for Nick Cage!
Whether Mandy is a good film is still anyone’s guess. But Cage has expressed that his goal is to make movies that don’t appeal to everyone. Even if they get bad reviews, he feels that the audience has been affected in some way and that is its own reward.
