Dark Horse Comics is continuing its partnership with Disney with a second Zootopia graphic novel. Aimed at younger reader, Disney Zootopia: Family Night includes two stories showing how Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde make time with their parents and siblings special. This book follows the currently available Disney Zootopia: Friends to the Rescue.
This new collection is written by Jimmy Gownley, illustrated by Leandro Ricardo da Silva, colored by Wes Dzioba, and lettered by Chris Dickey. While it’s intended for a younger crowd, the stories will appeal to all ages. The graphic novel also includes story-related activities and special features.
The first story in Disney Zootopia: Family Night follows Judy Hopps as she finally gets to spend some one-on-one time with her father. They have a father-daughter camping trip planned where she’ll earn a special Bunny Scout badge. This sounds like a great adventure for Judy, but her dad is worried about running into bears and foxes. Those are valid concerns. When bad weather ruins their plans, Judy’s dad comes up with a new idea that isn’t what Judy had in mind, but still ends up being special because they’re together.
The other tale centers on Nick Wilde. He wants to take his best friend to the biggest concert in Zootopia but he’ll have to make some clever deals to do that. With no money and not a lot of time, he has to use his wits to earn the cash…or whatever else it will take, to get some tickets.
I’m glad that books like this are in the works because it can help bring a younger audience into comics. Zootopia is a great property and it’s full of fun possibilities.
Disney Zootopia: Family Night is set for release on March 13th, 2019. It’s currently available for pre-order at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and your local comic shop. It’s a 48-page original graphic novel retailing for $7.99.
