Birds of Prey has found its Renee Montoya,
The Wrap reports actor Rosie Perez will play the beloved GCPD detective after an exhaustive search. She joins Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead who will play Black Canary and Huntress. Based on a concept spearheaded by Jordan B. Gorfinkel and writer Chuck Dixon, but later refined by Gail Simone, the Birds of Prey were former Batgirl Barbara Gordon, Black Canary and the Huntress. With Babs running missions as Oracle, Canary and Huntress were her field team. Eventually, other character joined the group even as the title took momentary breaks over the last twenty years.
In the upcoming Cathy Han-directed film, Barbara has been replaced by Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), but Huntress and Canary remain. The trio, alongside Montoya, will reportedly face off against Gotham City mobster Black Mask. Cassandra Cain is also said to appear in the film, but the part has not yet been cast.
Originally created for Batman: The Animated Series by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini, Montoya eventually crossed over into comics. She was a big part of the No Man’s Land event and later became The Question after a brief journey with Vic Sage to Nanda Parabat.
Birds of Prey opens on February 7th, 2020.
