I was walking through my local bookstore and I saw some gorgeous new covers for one of my childhood favorite book series, Artemis Fowl. Disney just released the first trailer for the live action film.
Artemis is a child prodigy and heir to an infamous Irish crime family. To cure his mentally ill mother, Artemis captures a fairy to ransom her for leprechaun gold and incurs the wrath of creatures from Irish folklore.
What makes Artemis Fowl unique is that its protagonist is a morally dubious anti-hero who uses his wits to outsmart magical opponents. In Artemis’ world, fairies live underground and use futuristic technology. Even the term leprechaun comes from LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police Recon).
From the trailer, it appears that the film will be adapted from the first novel. However, there are some dodgy special effects and questionable casting choices that are giving me the feeling that this might turn into another Wrinkle In Time.
Even so, I have my fingers crossed. Artemis Fowl is a special series and I hope that the film will attract a new generation of kids to read the books. Author Eoin Colfer plans to continue the series with the next book following the adventures of the Fowl Twins.
The Artemis Fowl Film will release August 9th 2019.
