In Brightburn, a husband and wife attempt to raise a child with Superman-like powers only to discover that he is more dangerous than they anticipated. The film was co-written and produced by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy).
The the idea of a superhero as a horror movie monster is intriguing, but I can’t help but feel that this premise was already explored beautifully in 2011’s Chronicle.
I also find it incredibly ironic that Warner Brothers pulled the plug on the Man of Steel franchise for supposedly being “too dark,” unlike the lighthearted Marvel films like Guardians of the Galaxy. Now we have James Gunn producing on a dark, violent Superman character. Movies are strange, perhaps it’s best not to dwell on it.
Brightburn is set to release in theaters on May 24th, 2019.
