Spinning out of Avengers: No Road Home is one of the strangest groups of heroes this side of the multiverse, the Savage Avengers. Writer Gerry Duggan and artist Mike Deodato join forces once again this May for a new series bringing Conan the Barbarian into the Marvel Universe. Conan will be joined by Wolverine, Venom, Punisher, Elektra and Brother Voodoo. The first issue will feature a cover by David Finch.
Gerry Duggan told Entertainment Weekly:
We envisioned a threat, a magical green zone where the evil wizards of Conan’s world are trading spells with The Hand in Japan. Conan is on a very Conan-like mission; he’s heard a tale of an amulet so he’s chasing it, and the evil magic sorcerers are doing something that would be a Marvel Avengers problem. It feels like we have found some very fertile ground that is a Venn diagram between those two worlds.
Fans will get a look at Savage Avengers on Free Comic Book Day as the FCBD Avengers comic will feature a 10-page story launching the new ongoing series. This seems a little odd as that comes after the first issue drops on May 1st.
SVP and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort told Marvel.com:
Savage Avengers is just what it says on the label—it’s all of the biggest badasses of the Marvel Universe brought together uneasily in one explosive series—and with Conan as a wild card. It’s big, it’s brash, it’s explosive, it never slows down—the only scenes in Savage Avengers that involve a table is when somebody is being thrown through one.
There are a lot of violent personalities in this mix and I’m very interested in how they’ll all work together.
