Collectors Deluxe Edition Cover

Z2 Comics has found a niche in the market by becoming a premier creator of music-affiliated graphic novels. Whether it’s Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys and Robert Finley for Murder Ballads or Paul Oakenfold for The Wonderful World of Perfecto, the publisher partners with big names in the music industry.

Their latest collaboration is with rock band, The Grateful Dead. Scheduled to be released in early 2020, will be Grateful Dead Origins. The original graphic novel will cover the origin story with a personal look at the formation of the iconic group. Take a look at the early days with Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Pigpen, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart taking dive bar gigs as the Warlocks to evolving their sound to the unique jam band they are known as today. Chris Miskiewicz will pen the comic with Noah Van Sciver providing the art.

Standard Edition Cover

There will be two editions of Grateful Dead Origins, a standard and limited collectors deluxe edition. The standard edition will be softcover and include an exclusive download of the band’s early music. The collector deluxe edition will be a limited run over sized hardcover that’s individually numbered and contain prints and autographs of the creators. It will also come with a vinyl record of previously unreleased tracks from the Grateful Dead.

Grateful Dead audiovisual archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux says:

We’ve seen many archival releases that offer magnificent audio representations of the Grateful Dead’s history, and several filmed interpretations of the Dead’s story. To these, we’re thrilled to add to the Dead’s narrative canon this beautiful portrayal of the Dead’s origin story in the form of this wonderful new comic. Chris and Noah have captured the Dead’s sensibility in their words and images that bring to life on the page the earliest days of the Grateful Dead, from the band’s founding in 1965 through to Woodstock. We couldn’t be happier to be partnering with such talented artists who have delved so deeply into the Dead’s history and origin.

Both editions are currently up for pre-order here.
