Although Vertigo is shutting down, DC Comics is doubling down on its mature imprint, DC Black Label with a slew of new announcements. The latest is The Last God, a dark high-fantasy series from writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson, artist Riccardo Federici, colorist Dean White, and letterer Tom Napolitano. It’s described as a “cross-generational quest to kill an evil tyrant king” in the land of Cain Anuun. The twelve-issue series kicks off in October.
Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson says:
This is a terrifying horror story told in a stunning epic-fantasy world. Set in two different generations, it follows a mighty fellowship of heroes that travels beyond the borders of creation to kill a god, and the next generation, who learn their predecessors aren’t the heroes the world believes them to be.
The Last God is also known as the demonic tyrant Mol Uhltep. Everyone believes he was killed thirty years ago by a fellowship of legendary adventurers, saving the world in the process. The realm entered a new age of peace and prosperity. When the leader of this group dies, their children and successors discover the truth: The Last God is still alive. This new generation must uncover the secrets of their parents and set out to finish what they started thirty years earlier.
This series features mind-blowing, terrifying art by Riccardo Federici, colorist Dean White, and letterer Tom Napolitano, three absolute geniuses in their fields, and epic world-building so deep and rich that it exists beyond the bounds of the page. Fans of D&D, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and Magic: The Gathering, and anyone who enjoys deep-dives into fantasy lore: you will be extremely well-served with The Last God. Stay tuned!
This sounds like an epic fantasy story and the creative team clearly did their homework. There’s even a map! You know they mean business when they did the due diligence to make a map.
Artist Riccardo Federici says:
When I was asked to draw this series I was so excited, both because I love the fantasy genre, especially when there are horror connotations, but also because it was an opportunity to graphically create a new world. Everyone on the team and at DC has shown me such confidence and I am so thankful.
Most fantasy series are hit or miss with me. For some reason it’s a genre that’s tough for me to get into. The Last God sounds like it’s right up my alley though so I’m definitely going to be checking it out.
DC Publisher Dan DiDio adds:
This series reinforces DC’s commitment to working with the best storytellers, as well as our commitment to finding new and original concepts to publish.
The Last God #1 is set for release on October 30th, 2019.
