SDCC 2019: The Latest From Marvel Games

by Gary Catig

Last year, Marvel Games made their first appearance in Hall H to spotlight Spider-Man on PS4. This year, they returned to San Diego Comic Con with news on several different fronts.

The first title they highlighted was Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, which came out several hours after the panel on the Nintendo Switch. The writer of the game, Marc Sumerak, had a daunting task working with such a big roster of characters and creating moments for each of them to shine. Despite the difficulty, he did enjoy the weird pairings of heroes and villains that would not normally interact with each other.

From the newest trailer they showed, we learned that Loki will be a playable character and they even shared some gameplay revealing his special attacks. Another two characters that will be available are Cyclops and Colossus. They will be part of a free download update on August 30. Gamers can also purchase the three batches of downloadable content that will come out in the future. They include an X-men package, a Fantastic Four package and a Marvel Knights package. The Marvel Knights will be available in the fall and will come with Blade, Moon Knight, Punisher and Morbius, the Living Vampire. The last two appear for the first time as playable characters in the series.

On their mobile game front, they announced a nine-week tournament for Marvel Contest of Champions. The tournament will run between SDCC and NYCC where 27 competitors battle for nine spots in the finals. A winner will be determined at NYCC and the competition begins this Wednesday, at 4pm.

Currently, Marvel’s Iron Man VR is being developed for the PlayStation VR. They wanted to give the superhero a new look for the game and they had artist, Adi Granov, design his armor. The developer, Camouflaj, wanted to stress the flight mechanics and the compelling Tony Stark story.

Marvel also has a partnership with the eSports team, Team Liquid. They revealed their latest jersey that was inspired by Spider-Man.

The panel ended with a look into Marvel’s Avengers. They showed an updated version of the gameplay video from E3 along with newer footage of the co-op experience as Iron Man and Thor take out an enemy base in a forest. The voice cast was brought up to talk about their experiences working on the game.

The customization aspects including the character’s look and skills were stressed during the discussion. They even showed concepts of costumes that draw from the movies and comics along with some original designs. Some of the more eye-catching visuals included Hulk in a suit and with an aboriginal theme. They mentioned the game’s exclusive partnership with Sony and how owners of the PS4 will be the first to gain early beta access. For those who are looking to purchase the collector’s edition of the game, it will come with a Captain America statue that was co-developed with Gentle Giant. Information about the pre-orders will come out later this year.
